Countries with the highest rates of poverty are Nigeria, India, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, and Syria. 

  • Nigeria has 93.7 million people in extreme poverty. 

  • India has 73 million people in extreme poverty. 

  • Democratic Republic of Congo has 62 million in poverty. They have a population of 78 million.

  • Bangladesh has 49 million people in extreme poverty. 

  • Syria has 80% of their population in extreme poverty.

Solutions:

Nigeria:

  • The Nigerian government plans to distribute $300 million to its poorest people. Around 300,000 households are expected to receive $14 per month.

  • The Nigerian government also offered free meals in primary schools.

​

Bangladesh:

  • Bangladesh recognized that empowering women is essential to ending extreme poverty. The leaders arrived at the conclusion that countries can never reach their full economic potential if half the population is not fully participating, this drastically reduced the amount of people in poverty.​
